Running Pace Calculator

Calculate running pace, finish time or distance from any two values, in km or miles and min/km or min/mile.

Pace

Distance

That is 5:00 min/km and 8:03 min/mile, a speed of 12.00 kph (7.46 mph).

The running pace calculator is the fastest way to connect the three numbers at the heart of every run: pace, time and distance. Give it any two and it works out the third. Choose whether you want to solve for pace, for finish time, or for distance, then enter your values in kilometres or miles and read the answer in both min/km and min/mile. Because the same result also appears as a treadmill speed in kph and mph, you never have to reach for a second tool to line up an outdoor pace with a belt setting.

How the calculation works

Pace is simply time divided by distance. If you cover 10 km in 50 minutes, your pace is 50 divided by 10, which is 5:00 per km. Turning that around, finish time is pace times distance, so holding 5:00 min/km over a half marathon of 21.0975 km predicts a time of about 1:45:29. Distance is time divided by pace, which answers questions like how far you would travel in 40 minutes at a steady 5:30 min/km. The calculator applies these three relationships and converts between metric and imperial units using the exact factor of 1.609344 kilometres per mile, so the numbers always agree.

Choosing a pace to train at

Most training plans prescribe paces relative to a recent race. Easy runs typically sit 60 to 90 seconds per kilometre slower than 5K pace, while tempo efforts hover near your one-hour race pace. Once you know a target pace, feed it into the finish time calculator to see the projected result, or into the splits calculator to build a lap-by-lap plan. If you only have an old race result, the race time predictor estimates an equivalent time for the distance you are targeting.

Pace, speed and unit helper

Runners on a treadmill or a bike computer often think in speed rather than pace. As a quick reference, 10 kph equals 6:00 min/km, and 12 kph equals 5:00 min/km. The helper below converts freely between min/km, min/mile, kph and mph so you can move between the way a track coach talks and the way a treadmill display reads.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your total time by the distance you ran. For example, 25 minutes over 5 km is 5:00 min/km. The calculator does this for you and also shows the equivalent min/mile pace and speed.

What is a good running pace?

It depends on your fitness and the distance. Many recreational runners cruise easy runs around 6:00 to 7:00 min/km, while a sub-20 5K needs about 4:00 min/km. Use the pace charts to see what each finish time requires.

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the min/km pace by 1.609. So 5:00 min/km is about 8:03 min/mile. The unit helper on this page converts pace and speed in every direction.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser with JavaScript, so nothing you type is uploaded or stored anywhere.
